Anchor Chain Marking

Summary of Yahoo Group Discussion January 2012

It is useful to mark the anchor chain at intervals so that an appropriate length of chain can be let out according to the depth of the anchorage.

The chain can be marked by paint, cable ties or purpose made plastic insert. Lashing with cord is not recommended as it tends to rust the chain at that point. If using paint cover a length of around 6 links with a base colour (white) with a second contrasting colour on top.

Cable ties have a tendency to cut fingers when manually handling the chain especially if the tie is clipped short.

The purpse made plastic inserts sit inside the chain links and do not cause a problem when handling the chain. The markers don't fall out but several markers are required at each position to make them conspicuous when chain is running out.

Anchor just at surface - red + white

20m - red (this is the shortest scope I normally use)

25m - red + yellow

30m - yellow

35m - yellow + green

40m - green

45m - green + blue

50m - blue

55m - blue + white

60m - white

You can buy the individual colours from: jimmygreen

Alternative system based on the marking on the commercial ships. One shackle in "any" colour and 5 shackels each side in a different colour (white)for 5 meter, and so on. My first marks are at 10m, for anchoring in 2m waterdepth (one blue and each side 1Oth shackel in white) Next mark is at 20m, for anchoring in 5m waterdepth (one blue and each side 20th shackle in white) Next mark is at 24m , for anchoring in 8m depth. Then at 30, 40m etc. Codes with different colours I always forget. Below 5m depth I use 5x the depth, from 10m on use 3x the depth,(4x in strong wind/tide situations),
