Proposal for Contents Lists

Guiding principles for Pages:

  1. Always make a page if you want a page, don't wait until there is a good structure to hang it on
  2. Every page should (ideally) be reachable by browsing from the main page in 4 clicks or less
  3. If the structure starts looking messy, change it (with consultation), don't wait for major clean-ups.
Yes, like it. DJJ 10:38, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

By the way - I like "other" better than "Misc" but I think we are getting a bit messy on the front page. "Westerly Yachts" seems a strange heading for something about the company and is confusing compared to "Westerly Classes". I'll have a think. Julian 09:17, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

At the article level sections could be:

1 to n article specific sections. For example very generally before, during and after sections.
Resources Section – containing web links to suppliers of materials or services
References Section – containing cross reference to WOA Journal issues and Magazine articles

This should generate a table of contents if the article structure demands it.

See examples of both above set up under Centaur

DJJ 05:20, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

The Centaur page looks great - we need a nicer table style though Julian 09:17, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Had a look at tables - style="border-collapse: collapse; border-width: 1px; border-style: solid; border-color: #000" seems simple to use and quite nice. Does the CSS add-in allow us to name it and use it by name? Julian 09:36, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

I've tried to get the CSS extension to work but no joy chasing up with Tim Birchn 12:21, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I followed the link to the FAQ and agree - its not the right start point for users. I've replaced it with direct links to what I hope are the most useful user help pages. These are the ones I use to remind me how to format text, etc. Hope you all approve Julian 23:30, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

Mikes problem was that he did not appreciate that editing was done in a separate section. This isn't clear yet. Maybe need to explain it right at the top. Also think we still need the overall FAQ link as a general starting link.

Going Live

Not my place, but I really think the wiki is pretty ready to go live. What do folks think?

Think we have done enough to get started DJJ 11:41, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

I see no harm in making it live. What do we think about annotating the classes page with Fin and Rig Configuration so people can be guided directly to the boats that might interest them? Also maybe we should clean up this page periodically I can't see the wood for the trees! Birchn 12:35, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Yes agree to cleaning up discussions page.
Think table will become confusing if we add Fin and Rig, might just manage Fin. What do others think?
Have got something on all class pages now. Still short of some pictures for larger classes as am waiting for permission to add them.
I think the structure is there and there is a limit to what can be done wrt content so agree is as far as we can take it before going live. Possibly need to protect somethings like Main Page. Will seek permission to publish
DJJ 13:03, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
I have emailed a limited list of potential contributors so we are in effect in a limited release situation.
DJJ 18:55, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I think we should refrain for abbreviations, PBO for example. We know what it means but others may not Birchn 13:12, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

OKDJJ 18:55, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Also it strikes me that having "Westerly 22 Modifications and Enhancements" is a bit redundant when looking at the Westerly 22 page surely "Modifications and Enhancements" would suffice Birchn 13:14, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

What do people think should be the Class subsection headings ? If we just have "Modifications and Enhancements" then top level page will get very full on the other hand it provides automatic cross referencing which saves work.

It would be worth adding a Back Link on the the bottom of subtopics to take you back to the class home page. Birchn 14:21, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

Agree how do we do this...just a Main Page link?
DJJ 18:55, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I've done the back links for the Konsort page essentialy the syntax is [[Main Page|Back to the Main Page]] or [[Konsort|Back to the Konsort Home Page]] does make it a bit easier to use I think...Birchn 19:14, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

I think we should standardise on a next page up link on every page. Generally this could be ^Back don't think you need the nowiki tags?DJJ 06:32, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Done some zebra stripping on the Konsort page. Any comments? Birchn 20:14, 30 November 2011 (UTC)

It was a bit bright but could be useful as grey in a complicated table. I see you have removed it :) DJJ 05:41, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

No it's still there but I've toned down the colour. The Nowiki tags where just for here to display the syntax rather than the link Birchn 07:50, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Think the Konsort statistics page looks good, but think the actual statistic data would be better centre justified - how do you do that?. I think the Westerly Classes table on main page now looks a mess with all the B F & L details and they're in black ink too. If you want to keep it they should be in blue too - and how do you do that? This table should also be centre justified. Re Westerly 22 on Westerly 22 pages etc., when you're working down all the lists adding bits, it does help you remember which class you're working on, but I do take your point. Vegable 00:57, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

I'll change the stats table and we'll see what it looks like, generally speaking a ragged right border is easier to read. I've made the classes columns wider and it looks better I think. Don't think we want to change the colour of B/F/T etc because that then implies that it's a link. If we want to style them we should use cascading style sheets (CSS) to ensure consistency across the whole wiki. I'm still looking into how best to implement this, so let's not all go off doing our own thing on each class page.... Birchn 13:10, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

As I've been the one who's been filling in all the statistics on every class page I take grave exception to the remark "so let's not go off doing our own thing on each class page...." If you want the volunteers to remasin volunteers, moderate your language lad. Vegable 18:25, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

And a great job! Its possible I might have tweaked one of the pages as an experiment - might not be you who are being accused! Anyway - I promise hands off on tables now - had my play, happy with whats on the site, look forward to CSS making it easy to be consistent. Julian 18:42, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

On the subject of talk page cleanup - I'm happy for any and all of my comments to be deleted in the interests of future clarity.

Front page is looking good. Julian 18:42, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
