MD1,MD2B and MD3B

Engine Manual can be downloaded from here:- [1]

A very simple easily worked on engine robustly made. Uses raw sea-water cooling and with practise it can easily be fired up by one person using the starting handle. Each cylinder is a separate unit and can be serviced without disturbing the rest of the engine. The only difference between the 1B,2B and 3B are the number of cylinders. The workshop manual covers all three engines.

Flywheel

The flywheel is tightened to 500 lbft!(700Nm) This is seriously tight and needs proffessional equipment to undo it. When the nut has been removed, tape over the screwthreads in order to protect the threads when lifting off the heavy flywheel. The threads are very fine and can easily be damaged. Do not under any circumstances imobilize the engine by trapping the starter wheel teeth with a screwdriver. The force needed to release the flywheel nut will break off these teeth

Oil Pump

With care it is not necessary to remove the flywheel in order to remove and refit the oil pump. It's tight and fiddlely and needs patience. Do not forget to prime (fill) the oil pump before refitting otherwise the engine runs initially without oil in the bearings.

Oil Strainer

If this comes loose the engine will lose oil pressure and illuminate the oil pressure light. If pressure is lost always check the strainer tightness first.
